"Amanti" - White marble - H. cm 40 - Artist: Marco Ambrosini For the sculptor’s work the technique is very important. To learn it every artist, in every age, has to pass through a long apprenticeship period, starting with the rough sketch: using a special hammer and a pick, the artist must learn to get the blocks free from the surplus parts and to test completely the chosen marble quality.

The “smodellatura” (moulding the marble with a sledge and a chisel) follows this first step. After that, using chisels of different sizes, as the gradine, and smaller tools to touch up the work, the artist will make its sculture smooth and sleek. He will end his creative process by the “polishing”, using sand and pomice-stone.

This sort of experiences will become decisive stations, foundamental for the artistical and personal formation of several sculptors of the XIX and XX centuries, who will often take part to the Carrara marble laboratories history. To prove that Carrara could still be proud of a large number of work furnishers, able to substain and form the artists of the last generation, is enough to have a look at the artistical course of the contemporary sculptors.
