The
hystory of marble is ancient, it comes back to the copper age. Inside
the apuan caves, in some underground
graves, “marble beads”, jewels and necklaces have been
discovered. But it is only in the roman age that marble has became
a fundamental element of the private and public architecture. A
stunning, bright, severe but also rich material, able to compete
with the greek art. Marble was used in the lining and the decoration
of buildings, in the statuary, in the forniture, decorative objects
and touristic manufacture.
Marble epos is still going on nowadays,
even if today a lot of crafts have disappeared (as lists-workers,
diggers and so on… ) and the digging and recovering techniques
have made the work less dangerous and hard.
